Powell kicks ass, hes a moderate and fine example of the type of republican I respect. Hes a no B.S. straight forward, honest, smart, guy…with enough honor, courage, self-respect, and morality to do what he sees is best without going with poplular sentiment. I think he’d be a kick ass presidential candidate, he’d at least push other candidates to be better, and at most be a damn good pres.

I am not sure where most of you are located. But I just received power Sunday night. I think it is more than clear that the US, LA, and the red cross were all in over the heads.
That being said, I really wish yall would stop all the bitchin and come assist in the clean-up.

The really hot weather occurred from July 12 to July 16. The 106° F on July 13th set the record for the warmest July temperature since records began at Midway in 1928. Not only were the daytime temperatures high but the nighttime low temperatures were quite high (upper 70s and lower 80s) as well. Record humidity levels also accompanied the hot weather. The high humidity and high nighttime temperatures provided little relief from the heat.
Urban Heat Island
Another contributing factor in the heat wave is the so-called “urban heat island”. Urban heat islands are caused by the high concentration of buildings, parking lots, and roads in urban areas, which tend to absorb more heat in the day and radiate more heat at night than comparable rural sites. Therefore, urban areas usually experience a lot less cooling at night than do rural sites. Furthermore, temperature measurements at O’Hare Airport, a more suburban site, will not reflect the severity of the 1995 heat wave in the inner city.
Most of the victims of the 1995 heat wave were the elderly in the heart of the urban area. Many of the poorer older citizens either had no air conditioning or could not afford to operate the system they had. Many older citizens were also hesitant to open windows and doors at night for fear of crime. By contrast, in the heat waves of the 1930s, many residents slept outside in the parks or along the shore of Lake Michigan.
Other factors that contributed to the high number of deaths were an inadequate local heat wave warning system, power failures, inadequate ambulance service and hospital facilities, and the aging of the population in the urban areas. City officials did not release a heat emergency warning until June 15, the last day of the heat wave. Thus, such emergency measures as Chicago’s five cooling centers were not fully utilized. The medical system of Chicago was severely taxed as thousands were taken to local hospitals with heat-related problems. In some cases, fire trucks were used as substitute ambulances.
Unfortunately, Chicago will continue to be vulnerable to heat waves because of the urban heat island and the socio-economic makeup of the urban area (high percentage of lower-income elderly). However, the number of deaths may be reduced by: a) implementing an early-warning system that takes into account the local conditions, b) better define the heat island conditions associated with heat waves to improve forecasts, c) develop a uniform means for classifying heat-related deaths, and d) increase the research on the conditions of heat stress and heat waves

I agree 100% that that respect has to be earned, to blindly acceptor follow anyone (of any political party) makes you a sheep. There were things done wrong on all levels of government and some are blaringly evident. Our federal government was requested for aid days prior to katrina hitting NO. They failed. The Mayor should have done a better job getting people out, he failed. The Governor should have performed her job better, she failed.
I would prefer that those who choose to resort to name calling stop. This is a serious issue and refusing to look at and face facts against anyone (regardless of your own political beliefs) is not going to prevent this from happening again. To blindly refuse to learn forom this tradegy and prevent the same mistakes from happening again is criminal.

But I am concerned about our governments failures-at all levels. We, as citizens, pay taxes that in part are suppose to help us in certain circumstances. This needs to be addressed without political bullshit getting in the way. It makes me concerned about how effective Homeland Security is. I am assuming by your name you are a great fan of G.W. That’s great you are entitled to you belief in him but please allow others the right to voice their feelings. You do not have to agree with them just show some of that common courtesy you were talking about.
As for Bush’s responsiblity it is many fold. He is responsible directly for whom he choose as director of FEMA. He is responsible for the funding of the Army Corp of Engineers whose job it is to upgrade and repair water rescores in this coutry and their budget (which he has cut in the last 3 years).
Others are also responsible, that would be the state, local government and many individuals who just choose not to leave and had transportation. Noone comes out of this smelling like a rose.

A report on CNN this morning said that his (the reporter’s) interviews from NO evacuees at the Astridome many stated they were ‘furious’ with the mayor. They said all they wanted was for him to come down to the Superdome with a bullhorn and reassure them.

As I have stated before, I believe that Government interfers in my life to far. Religion should remain out of public policy. Citizens of the US need to learn to be more self sufficient and able to take care of themselves. As such the government needs to overhaul the system they have in place that discourages people from doing so. Personal responsiblity must be taught at all levels-the individual, local, state and federal goverment.
Taxes are paid by individuals who work, with those taxes the government has a duty to perform duties to keep the citizens safe from threats. Corruption at all levels of our government are creating a cancer that threatens the very thread of our democracy. Political sides are quick to point the finger at each other in their rush to avoid blame.
We are a society that prefers to place our mother and fathers in homes when they become a liability to our way of life instead of acceptng our resposibilty to tend them ourselves. This disgusts me.

Oh and by the way when a natural diseaster such as Katrina happens it is criminal that the individual, local, state and federal government was unable to establish chain of command, communication and relief effort with days advanced warning. I know that you believe that the individual shares a lion share of the blame because they refused to leave but there are those who depended on others to make that decision for them (those in nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living, and children to name a few). The governments failure to protect the most vunerable of its citizens is a disgrace.

Obviously I know a little more than you because I know that there is a national organization run under the federal government whose name is FEMA that when requested and the President agrees is to provide aid to state and local governments.
The protocal for that request was done and the President issued a state of emergency but failure of FEMA and others was criminal. If I am wrong on the protocol please feel fre to supply me with the correct one.

I contend that THAT kind of neglect is criminal… and the real reason why we should help. The actual crap that went on in that town with the looting, shootings, rapes etc…. They should be held accountable in the strictest sense for their diverting attention from those who REALLY needed help.

3. Keeping in mind this hurricane plan that was not followed, take a look at the picture of the 255 buses, which I picture yesterday at Junkyard blog. That means at a capacity of 66 on board, 16,830 New Orleans residents could have been evacced out in one trip. Even if you have a lower capacity per bus, say 50 per bus, you’re still getting nearly 13,000 out in one run. In an emergency mandatory evacuation, you could probably get away with putting more than 66 on each of those buses.”
4. No one has proof of what exactly caused the breaches of 3 canals, but 1 eye witness quoted on Fox News today speaking with said that he saw floating grain barges hit the 17th st. canal and cause that breach, not just flood waters. 1) The links you provide do not back up that he called for an evacuation . In fact all are dated 9/17 and do not cover it at all. I too have heard that WHEN the evacuation was ordered by the mayor and governor the governor stated that Bush had expressed his concern for the individuals in the flood areas safety. What was really said is actually only known by two people, the President and the Governor-unless one or the other was using speaker phone. The AP offers a view, maybe it’s the way it happen but maybe the other papers are right and he expressed concern. We (you or I) do not know.
2) If you had researched how FEMA works you would know that it is their job to co-ordinate resources. The government at all levels would submit their list of resources and their needs and FEMA is to ensure that the needs are meant.

I agree with you to a point. I believe that discord causes conversion-which is always good. No elected official should be given a ‘blank check’ and blindly supported. Doing so would put our democracy on a slippery slope. Each and every elected offical should be held accountable for their actions (lies and items that they have done in office). I do not agree with using religion as an election point. A priest (or minister or any other religious leader) might know the bible better than one canidate but that in itself does not make them the best person to run the country of office that they are running for.
I see the great divide in this country being caused by large groups refusing to consider anything but religion, ignoring everything else that should be considered. Until individuals and groups are willing to get pass the ME ONLY or my religious way only, I do not see America becoming a better place.
Morals and social conscience is something that should be taught by example. Begining with the home. Some of the most moral people I know have never gone to an organised religious church. The values that we have are what is important. Many have throw away values-including some of our elected officals. Sadly I see not any effort to regain some of the gerat morals and values such as individual responsibilty, family responsibilty, respecting your fellow citizen (regardless if their political belief), being willing to help a neighbor or community with no thought to what is in it for you, and many others.
We need to focus our attention on education in order to remove barriers that remain in this country and teach our children how to not only survive but succeed in this world. We need to force our politicians to be accountable for every action, every dollar, and every vote that they make.

If we are all americans, why does our government only allow military people to purchase items at a discounted rate?? I know of some people who are or has been serving our country and they have Base Priviledges so they can go on a Military Base and shop for items they need and yet us “civilians” can only go to stores like WalMart, Kmart, and Malls to buy our things. What is so fair about that??????? GWB is only concerned about HIS own self and the more he can take from “Civilians” like us??
I also know of people who are fighting for our country, or should I say for GWB? The people I know are not happy to do what gw tells them, yet they also don’t want to be imprisoned for keeping their OWN families safe here at home!

Prehaps I can shed some light on military prilevges for you as an Air Force brat. My father proudly served this country for 23 years, serving in Korea, Vietnam and any other rat hole our government sent him (often without his family).
