New Orleans Mayor Issues Desperate SOS

Upside-Down Flag flown in New Orleans. Distress Signal.

Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. “This is a desperate SOS,” the mayor said.

    To My Fellow Americans,

Here is a man that Pat Robertson made death threats against and what does Pres. Chavez do? He offers aid to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. He does not sound like a threat to us, a dictator or someone we need to be afraid of. He sounds like a man we need leading this country of ours. This is true compassion at work. Why don’t Americans scream for such leadership?!

  2. Marie-Jean Says:

Just want to say to all Louisiana uninhabitants, and Mississipians too, that France and French are beside them. I hope that you will learn a thing about this horrible tragedy : instead of fooling the whole world with your fucking way of life, liberty, assassinations of guys who do not please to your fucking politicians or fool preachers, TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN PEOPLE !

God, I’m watching Cnn, I’m in a social situation not very good, but I gave $50 to the Red Cross. Hope for you all the best. And I want you to forgive our fucking president Chirac to have refused to be aside you all along the aftermath of 11 September.

  3. jenn Says:

The military should have been in there two days ago. I dont understand why we can go overseas and attain order, but in our own country they are just letting people die. They are just letting thugs kill our own. These are innocent people, babies, where is OUR military
i am a military wife and i would be honored if they sent my husband to help these people. It makes me sick. Send our troops in there and get order. Save these people!

  4. Rich Says:

    To those following the Media,
A close friend of mine lives in Lake Charles, La, she informed my the looting and violence has spread from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and Lake Charles, including a riot in downtown Baton Rouge. One of her closest friends is on the Lake Charles Fire Department and volunteered to go to New Orleans. He was briefed before he left on Tuesday of the situation he was going to be facing. He was told to beware of the animals, in particular alligators and bull sharks! They are feeding on the corpses and pose a threat to all. He was also informed of prisoners that had escaped and possibly armed. These things not reported by the media, maybe because they haven’t been confirmed or they are to delicate for us Americans to see. Just like the truth about Iraq! I have the right to know!

  5. Jeff Says:

America is home to all variety of scum, its not a lie. America is also home to those who choose to make it great, those who choose to help each other and make life better for everyone.

It’s very biased to say only one type of person exists in america, and that everybody in the country moves in the same direction.

Americans need a better perspective on the freedoms that their country bestows upon them simply for being a citizen in the US, but it seems the country has forgotton sometimes. At the same time, there are those who honor the country and help preserve the freedom it represents.

A disaster is both a tradegy and blessing. The tradegy tears people apart but the blessing brings them together, makes this country learn to help each other and work together.

America is not perfect, but it isn’t bad.

  6. Mark Says:

People of New Orleans, quit wasting fighting amoungst each other and looting unnessicary things such as electronics or alcohol… help each other and get the hell out of there. The government aside, theres a few thousand of you stranded there, work together and figure a way out.

  7. A_Venezuelan Says:

    To the lucky lady:
You are really lucky to live in a free country. I’m going to tell you something that happened 6 years ago in Venezuela, the country were your so beautiful dictator is ruling since 7 years ago. In December 1999 a mudslide occurred in one of the coastal state close to Caracas (the capital). This disaster was announced by meteorologist, but he never warned the population because of political issues. After the mudslides and flooding the response took place after several days and people died in thousands, men were raping women and looting liquor store and jewelry store. The death toll was close to 50,000 people and after six years there are still homeless because of that disaster and the infrastructure is still destroyed (he denied help from USA at that moment). Kids were separated from their parents during rescue operations and there are still some kids lost (probably were sold in black market).

So your role model of president is just a populist that is offering the oil of Venezuela as international propaganda and meanwhile his citizens are starving, homeless and jobless. Everybody that is against his ideas is prosecuted and even killed.

  8. Vahine Says:

    Marie-Jean

You do sound angry and frustrated… but no need for f*** thick or that… ça fait pas avancer le schmilblick.

what the world needs now, is love, sweet love… and compassion, generosity, sharing, empathy.
The people that are currently stuck in their attics, on roofs, in the Convention center, in hotels do not care about what stupid political comments and blame games. They’re hungry, thirsty and scared. They’re the ones needing help and prayers right now.

Let’s hold the fights for a while, shall we?

  9. glassy Says:

Many things here are beyond me and I can’t believe I am seeing them on this site. This is real, OUR Gulf Coast is destroyed. I personally cannot even imagine what it is like there, other than the filtered news pics. Why are people (Marie-Jean) talking dirty politics. Yes Bush is evil, he is not all of us. There is no need for that right now, If you have a problem with US just sit there and be quiet. No one here is bashing the French right now. Chavez had a death threat from ONE of us recently and is still helping.

On another note, I may have felt a momment of faith in our fearless leader, Bush when he actually said “don’t buy gas if you don’ t have to”. Ive never felt good about a thing that came out of his mouth. (comments please)

OH yeah, Does anyone know how much oil there is in France?

  10. Vahine Says:

I don’t believe we have oil in France. I might be wrong about that though.

I totally agree with you when you talk about ‘labels’ and ’stereotypes’. You don’t choose where you are born. I was born in France, you in the USA. Great! Let’s share experiences instead of opposing them.

Hoping for a quick relief for people stuck in ravaged areas.

  11. Outsider Says:

Ahem… i hope u ppl who voted and support Bush and all he represents, don´t expect real compassion from ANY country. And i hope i don´t have to explain u WHY.

Keep eating all the **** u want from your dominated media…

  12. Mandy T Says:

This situation has escalated beyond reason. These people need help and they need it fast. I was reading an article a moment ago that I want to share . . .

    ————————

Donald Dudley, a 55-year-old New Orleans seafood merchant, complained that when he and other hungry refugees broke into the kitchen of the convention center and tried to prepare food, the National Guard chased them away.

“They pulled guns and told us we had to leave that kitchen or they would blow our damn brains out,” he said. “We don’t want their help. Give us some vehicles and we’ll get ourselves out of here!”

    ———————

That is utterly pathetic. I cannot believe that the National Guard threatened to KILL people who were only trying to find something to eat! The chaos that has erupted is only going to worsen unless action is taken NOW.

Bush said that we should have zero tolerance for looters . . . well, in my opinion I feel that we should have zero tolerance for the lack of compassion that the above article displays. I know that the people in New Orleans are stressed, scared, hungry and thirsty but honestly the shootings, rapes and riots aren’t helping things.

In times of crisis there is also an opportunity for the best to come out in people. That is what we need now. We need our government to work their BEST to bring immediate aid to these people and we need to come together so the pieces of these shattered lives can be put back together.

  13. peter Says:

FEMA is making a big mistake by separating families during evacuation. That’s hard and will create more problems that it solves. The fact that one person needs to be send to a hospital should not mean that his/her relative can be evacuated with that patient. I was watching CNN and they showed a mother who was separated from her recently born child, because the child was sick and needed to be airlifted to another hospital. How do you think that mother is feeling right now, not knowing where her child is. That’s crazy and stupid. Stop making mistakes.

  14. Vahine Says:

    Outsider,

I feel extreme compassion for the people affected by Katrina, even though I might not be Georges Bush’s biggest fan.
I hope, I HOPE, that people care about victims and survivors of this tragedy because they are human beings and not because of the passports they might hold.

  15. Robynn-KC, MO Says:

I’m so emotional about what is happening down there. My family is ok but my God in Heaven, what the hell is the government doing? NOTHING!! There is not time to call a meeting in congress that just passed a bill for billions of $$$ for releif…Great!!! Where is all the medical and military personnal??? Get those children and eldery to other hospitals…all neighboring states should have already stepped in, Kansas City did..We got 30 children last night. Shoot the idiots back that are shooting at our helicopters!!!! Ignorant people!!! We have no use for them. We all better stand together because the government is doing nothing, gas prices are soaring and not because of the storm..People need help. I don’t know how to open my home, I’m 700 miles north…we don’t have time for the politics….get these people help and get them out…NOW!!!!

  16. Lisa Says:

I am a very upset american. I have been in tears today over images on the TV and reading cnn.com. I hate bush and what politics has become in america. not just bush. My car has food and water in it and I am taking it to a local collection site to help load a trailer going down there (from iowa) tomarrow. I cry and pray and try to get info here on internet. There are more americans like me that are not getting in the news. Fighting here on blogs dose no good. I know for me I need to tame my rage at our administration long enough to be right enough with God to have my prayers be heard. Now I am going to go read my Bible for a little while.

  17. jenn Says:

what the hell is going on? why arent they helping these people. why are they making them stay in new orleans. the freaking governement keeps saying the guard is in there, but the people are still suffering. my husband is military and right now i am ashamed. why arent we in there?

  18. Felix Perez Says:

    I am DISGUSTED.
I am disgusted with the leadership vacuum. I am disgusted with the Army Corps of Engineers. I am disgusted with the President. I am disgusted with the Homeland Security Secretary. I am disgusted with the politicians. I am disgusted with the law enforcement. I am disgusted with the military commanders. I am disgusted with the looters.
I am a veteran of the United States military. I fought for the ideals of this nation. I fought and served with the belief that I was defending a way of life found nowhere else. I have been betrayed.
I am literally crying. What happened to my USA?
If we can drop supplies in an active war zone, why in God’s name can’t we drop supplies into our own country? We have cildren dying in their mother’s arms. We have grandparents dying in front of their families. What happened to our great society? Was it all an illusion?

    I am DISGUSTED!

  19. glassy Says:

    Donate to the Red Cross.
Yes the US is screwed up its been this way for a while. Maybe this disaster of all disasters will open more peoples eyes. Bitching at one another is doing nothing. (no, I’m not innocent)

  20. joshua Says:

Thanks for the outlet and great site. I run and publish www.Bumpshack.com a news blog site.
I went to school in the Baton Rouge area and Louisiana is very dear to me. I have started a Katrina Relief blog link off my site. I would appreciate everyone to help spread the word. The link is http://www.Bumpshack.com/katrina.htm
You will see the site has a wide array of stories from the storm and survivors sharing with the readers of the site along with links to where people can donate money or services to help.
    Thanks for the help

  21. Bill G Says:

You people wanted Bush-NOW what do you think????

  22. Lauren Says:

I cannot tear myself away from the tragedy seem on Tv. But I’m getting so many mixed emotions. why did so many choose to remain when they were warned to evacuate? I can understand the sick and frail, but not the healthy. And then the looting and crimes being commited, is atrocious. What an enbarrassment to our country. And now the finger pointing at the government. So because of the stupidity of the ones who chose to stay, the government is being blamed by those for not getting there fast enough and our country is and will be suffering the financial burden for those people who chose to stay, and I’m speaking of the healthy ones. Politics aside, does anyone really believe our government would take its time to let Americans die? This is a difficult challenge for all. Conditions make it difficult to work quickly. I do have great sympathy for what has happened, but I see something in our country I do not see in others. When they are rescued or hope to be rescued, they are so thankful that someone came to their aid, here I see not thankfullness, but anger that it took so long and a attitude that they shouldn’t have been inconvenienced. And the looters who do not even care they are being viewed in the mist of their crime. I realized the heat and lack of food and water and the devasastation observed by these people, can make them not think too clearly, but not to resort to crimes.

  23. cdu Says:

mandy t Please take what you are hearing with a grain of salt. I find it highly doubtful that a seafood merchant did not have transportation out of the city and had to break into the kitchen of the convention center for food. Also, I find it hard to believe that Guardsmen would threaten to shoot these people they have been activated to help. Think about it…the sooner the people of New Orleans are evacuated, the sooner these Guardsmen get to go home to their loved ones. You see, they also are living without electricity and running water, dislocated from their families and their normal lives in an effort to help others. The sooner they can complete their mission, the better they will like it…however, they are human and certainly don’t appreciate being shot at, cussed, gang-jumped, criticized or lied about as they perform this humanitarian mission…would you?

  24. Dan Greif Says:

I’ve walked through some of the poorest neighborhoods in Port Au Prince, Haiti. I’ve traveled through the most devastated communities in Newark, New Jersey, Baltimore, Maryland, South Bronx, New York, Bridgeport, Connecticut. I have heard gut wrenching stories from family and friends who served on the front lines in WW2. I’ve worked in a homless shelter in the inner city and seen horrendous physical and psychological disorders. I’ve seen people die, first hand, from house fires and car and motorcycle accidents. I’ve confronted burgulars in both my home and place of work. I’ve known two aquaintances who were murdered. HOWEVER, NOTHING, BUT NOTHING, COMPARES WITH WHAT PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING NOW IN NEW ORLEANS!

Before this damn hurricane, and the wretched Federal government response, what is currently happening in New Orleans would have been classified as “Science Fiction!” A story so fantastic, I doubt anyone would have published it! I pray the American people realize this experience is traumatizing millions of people and WE NEED TO NOT FORGET COME EACH, AND EVERY, ELECTION DAY! Given the right set of circumstances, what is happening in New Orleans could someday happen in your state!

THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR INCOMPETENCE ON SCALE THIS HUGE! WE ARE THE RICHEST AND MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! PEOPLE ARE STILL TRAPPED AND DYING, AND FOUR DAYS HAVE COME AND GONE! This will go down as one of the greatest debacles ever. No city has died this brutally since World War 2!

My thoughts and prayers are with all those now struggling to stay alive and sane!

  25. E.A. Says:

Everybody take a moment and stop the bitching. There will be plenty of time for that later. Open up your wallets, take out your credit cards and donate money A.S.A.P. to any charity that supports the relief effort in the Gulf Coast. They are in a Giant World of Shit!

Make Yourselves Useful, DO IT NOW!

  26. NANCY Says:

I AM SO TIRED OF HEARING THAT HELP IS ON THE WAY, WELL IF THEY SLOW UP A LITTLE MORE THEY WONT HAVE ANYBODY TO HELP.

  27. John Says:

The efforts of the Homeland Security Chief and The President are laughable at best. The President of the United States “has asked his father and former President Clinton to lead a private fund-raising campaign for victims.” You mean the USA does not have the resources to fund the victims?
The chief of an ambulance company stopped the rescues after “reports” of shots fired at a military helicopter. Too bad his company isn’t run by Firefighters and United States Soldiers because they seem to be the only ones with the balls to help people and risk their lives to do it. FEMA seems to be so incredibly disorganized that they dont know their head from their ass. I am so mad and there is nothing I can do to help other than send my money and prayers.

  28. AligaterAngel Says:

John: there is something else you can do Donate Blood. The is a shortage of blood all along the Gulf Coast right now.

Lauren: Alot of the people that chose to stay didn’t really have a choice most of New Orleans live well below the poverty level and don’t even own cars. As far as the looters I have thought about them quite a bit today there is no reason to steal a tv they won’t let them carry them on the busses and its not like they have a way to plug it in. But as far as the ones you are seeing on the news stealing juice and water and food. Think about this for a minute if you are in a ravaged city with no idea when you were getting out holding your dehydrated starving child in your arms. Wouldn’t you be willing to steal to keep them alive. I know I would.

There is really no way to know how one would react in a crisis like that unless you have been in one.

I have been watching the convoys drive past since tuesday the problem is there are places outta gas and roads washed out and littered with trees and houses. It will be a long time before the Gulf Coast can get back to some semblance of normalcy. In the mean time all the finger pointing and blaming isn’t helping anyone. So if you pray please do for all of Katrinas victims.

. . . All is the earth . Rememeber Iraq

And land is not a private property of any Country.
Regresen a los soldados de Irak a USA y ayuden a la gente POR FAVOR .

  30. Lea Says:

This just amazes me. I have seen some a few wise words here,
and I have seen some words spoken out of true ignorance.

Lauren, why did so many people *choose* to stay you ask.

How about those that could NOT leave. The ones that are
poor, that had no cars, nor did they have money for plane
tickets or bus tickets. Even if they had of had the money
most flights were cancelled and rental cars were taken.
What were they supposed to do, walk out ?

and […] “I realized the heat and lack of food and water and the devasastation observed by these people, can make them not think too clearly, but not to resort to crimes.”

Oh pleeeeease, have you ever been in the center of any disaster,
let alone one of this magnitude ? Have you ever gone without food
or water for several days in the heat. I would venture to say
you haven’t. So quit being so judgemental.

There are the tourists down there that didn’t have rental
cars that were returning home via planes, once again flights
    were either full or cancelled.

As for those of you who choose to bring politics into this and
blame this disaster on Bush, how about all the presidents that
came before him ? They certainly didn’t do anything to prevent
it from happening either. Since it didn’t happen on their watch
how do you KNOW things would have been any different as far as
rescue operations go. I can only ass-u-me in your infinite
wisdom or via crystal ball you just know it would be if someone
    else was in charge.

New Orleans has been a disaster that has been waiting to happen for years and the odds finally caught up with it.

What I would like to know is why was there ever a city created
10 feet below sea level that close to a coast that is prone to
hurricanes ? I suppose it was because it was a natural seaport.

If you want to blame a political figure or group, blame the
Mississippi River Commission in 1885 when they adopted a “levees only” policy.

This policy was based on the theory that by containing the river with levees, the force of the high water would scour out the floor of the river, deepening the channel sufficiently to carry any flood water straight out to the sea. The use of manmade reservoirs, outlets and cutoffs for runoff were rejected time and time again. For the next forty years, the River Commission stuck to this policy, not only refusing to build any manmade outlets for flood waters, but also actively sealing up the river from many of its natural outlets.

The Army engineers working on the levees were soldiers, not scientists, and the “levees-only policy” remained uncontested within the Corps of Engineers. In reality, the levees caused the river to rise, requiring higher and higher levees to contain the waters.

I am not a Bush fan, but it bothers me when I hear people try to blame
all of our problems on Bush including natural disasters. This “disaster”/problem was created long before his term(s).

This is once again man trying to fight mother nature, and as we all know mother nature will eventually win.

The main thing now is to help the people that are stuck in the middle
of it, and to quit wasting time by casting blame. How about doing
your part and volunteering to go down and help, instead of mouthing
off about how slow it’s going and playing arm-chair quarter back. Maybe then you will get a true picture of the magnitude of this disaster and how difficult it is to rescue the people that are still trapped.

Now I’ll get off MY soap box.

  31. tallahassee Says:

I cry everytime I think about everything happing right here in our own counrty….I know there is danger for the rescue workers but can’t someone airlift/drop in cases of water to the people strandad until they can be safed…..we have people suffering right in front of us. doesn’t this make the president feel guilty. someone get in there and help them.

  32. Charlie Says:

Where’s “Waldo” Bush??? Where is he? We can move a quarter of a million troops to Iraq and level Baghdad in less than an hour but we can’t get our own citizens, our fellow countrymen, out of harms way. Why haven’t we flown in MASH units to provide medical care - why havent we evacuated these suffering people to unused and open army bases? Why hasnt the President addressed the nation?
    WHERE ARE YOU WALDO BUSH???

  33. peter Says:

The military veteran is right. Why we can’t drop food and water like we do in active combat areas? It could help ease the problem. Additionally, why the National Guard is not helping inside the convention center? they need to place soldiers there. I also heard on CNN that a police station is being attacked by looters that want to take possesion of the arms located inisde that station. what is happening? that behavior cannot be accepted. I can’t believe that people are let dying. I guess the problem with evacuation is more a matter of where you are going to place the evacuees. I believe that since the military bases are empty, they should use those infrastructures, at least temporarily, to host the evacuees. Why they can’t do that?

  34. james pretlow Says:

Bush is partly to blame because his adminstration cut funding to the army corps of engineers program that covers the levees calling them “pork”.

The news is partly to blame because instead of taking pictures and trying to win a pulitzer prize they should have been dropping food from the news helicopters to the victims.

The news wants us to keep watching the news. They do not want to report what’s happening- they report what they think will make us watch.

If this were Palm Springs, Scarsdale, Beverly Hills or the Hollywood Hills, things would be moving a lot faster.

The truth is the victims do not make much money, they do not pay a lot of taxes- most of them are on earned inocome credit, and they do not turn out and vote in record numbers.

What the administration does not understand is that these people are the heart and soul of our country. They drill our oil in the gulf, they process our shrimp, they work at the new orleans hotels cooking our meals and cleaning our rooms when we go on conventions or vacations in new orleans, They are americans and that is all that should matter.

Our government is using class as a determining factor in who gets help and who gets killed.

Our governemnt is killing those people intentionally to change our nation from a free society to a corporate welfare dictatorship- it is only a matter of time before they refer to the looters as terrorists.

Last night the US Army went into an american city with weapons locked and loaded against our own citizens.

Instead of rescue workers with food, clothing and transportatin to shelter- the governemnt send in squads of us infantry with loaded weapons and shoot to kill orders.

  35. American Says:

I think most of you just half-listen to the news and dont even watch.

Open this link, click on “Images” underneath the headline and look at picture 15. What is that? Is that the military dropping water and food to people?
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/

Now open this link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9167426/page/2/ and read at the bottom where the lady was COMPLAINING about being taken to the Astrodome.
“Ruby Roussell, who lost her house and car to the hurricane, said she climbed aboard a bus in New Orleans thinking she’d be dropped off in Baton Rouge, where she has family. Instead, she found herself in Houston.

“We didn’t choose to come to this place,” she said. “We didn’t ask to come here.”

She has a cool place to sleep, a bed, meals and water. And she doesn’t want to be there?

Why is this a no win situation? Why are people yelling to get out of the Superdome in NO and then complaining that they dont want to be in Houston either?

Why are people yelling that there’s no one to help and then shooting at the helicopters trying to rescue them?

Why are people saying there is no help yet all the pictures you see is of the military lifting people off roofs?

Why are people saying that they’re stuck at the Superdome and yet the astrodome is filled to capacity and they’re moving people to Dallas and San Antonio?

WHY IS IT A NO WIN SITUATION?!?! WHAT can we do to make these people happy? What will it take to make people realize that it takes time and that there are people trying to help but that they CANT because the people they are trying to help WONT LET THEM HELP?

I’m sick and tired of the blame game. People say that Bush cut funding for the levys, well I’d like to know that the Reps. from Louisiana did to stop that from happening? They were elected to make the best decisions for their state, but did they even fight for money to build a new levy?

You can all fight it out online but I haven’t heard too many people saying that they’ve donated to the Red Cross, donated blood, donated supplies… nothing. I myself, I will be in Houston this 3-day weekend (a 3 hour drive from San Antonio) at the Astrodome handing out supplies and helping those people. I challenge you all to do the same.

  36. case of the dumba$$ Says:

Do you really think the government doesn’t want the military there? Do you think they want gas prices to be as high as they are? Get Real! You all act like this is what they want. They wanted those people to get the hell out of Dodge. Did they? No, they sat on their ass complaining. They think everyone owes them something.

The last time I checked, I was responsible for everything that happens to me. As you are. It is extreemly stupid to sit by and wait for someone to help you, people need to get the hell off the couch, put down the snickers bar, and take care of themselves. Is it the governments fault they spent their welfare check in 2 days? NO.

Quit bitching and get off your butt and do something for your neighbor and yourself. If youre tired of paying too much for gas, buy a bike. When is the last time you walked to the store instead of driving? Are your legs broke or are you just too fat. This is America, you have the right to take care of yourself and help others. It is time for people to accept responsibility for themselves and their family. I do not expect others to care for my family while I am sitting on the couch.

” Never trouble another for what you can do for yourself.”
    - Thomas Jefferson
    (1743 - 1826)
    3rd U.S. President

  37. American Says:

Case: I totally agree. You couldnt have said it better. When it cost me $37 to fill up my 10 gallon tank yesterday, I went to Wal Mart and bought a bike. I live about a mile from my work and just realized how stupid I was for driving there and back everyday. Plus I need the exercise.

  38. Linda Says:

I think the paratroopers should go in by the thousands. If you don’t want to be shot, take cover and drop your weapons. Period. We (the miltary) have taken back what’s left of the city.

  39. Oregonian Says:

WOW! So much hostility. I am going to take a stab at the media. They are roaming freely around the city of New Orleans, reporting all that is bad. Is this keeping the aid out? Relief efforts are hesitant to go into areas of looting, killing and rape. I personally would not go there! I have been watching the media for four days as they enterview people who are starving, thirsty and dieing. They have been at press conferences with FEMA and Homeland Security, did any one of them consider telling the authorities that there were thousands at the Convention Center waiting for aid? Did any of them tell them where they spoke to people needing help? I never heard one of them mention it. They seem to be content with allowing people to die so they will get their story. It is too easy for the media to criticize and capitalize on a desperation situation rather than helping. The media thrives on disasters such as this because it sales papers. The longer they can make it last, the more news they can sell. For once I would like to see them turn off the mic and the camera, pick up a phone and call someone who has the power to make a difference! The media knows where the food and water is, they have helicopters and trucks, why were they not helping the people they desired interviews from. The people putting together the relief effort are not watching TV, they don’t have time. They have to rely on others eyes and ears to let them know what is happening in the areas affected by the storm and where the victims are. The media should have to take responsibility and help the victims by making a phone call. And will some one tell the mayor and governor to get away from the cameras and get out into the street and help those people. Get outside and see what is happing to thepeople of your great city and help them. TURN THE CAMERAS OFF!

  40. Helper Says:

Linda, where are the paratroopers going to land exactly?

  41. Linda Says:

Why don’t you tell Robin Roberts that? I don’t think she was too concered about “sales” pulitzer prizes etc…… when she laid eyes on her mother, what was left of the place she called home .

  42. Debbie Says:

It’s true that many people should go to Houston or other hurricane affected areas to help if they are able to. But the authorities have said we should not do that, we should give $$ so that is what I did. Craigslist.org has many people on its website offering places to stay for many of these people. Their generosity is unparalled, however how are these displaced persons even going to find out that these people are offering them a place to stay, since they have no internet. My issue with the government is that they had helicopters in the area immediately after the storm. They easily could have lowered pallets of canned goods and water. That is the VERY LEAST they could do, and that WAS NOT DONE.

I am going to address the “they should have evacuated” issue. I am a well off white female living in Miami, Florida. I have never evacuated because of my pets, and basically because I have nowhere to go. However, I will probably rethink this issue in the future. I have resources and could probably drive ten hours up the road to Atlanta, if need be. But come on people, where do you think these impoverished, sick people, with not a penny to their name were going to go? Not everyone is able to evacuate. It’s not everyones’ idea to ride out a storm of this magnitude but you know it is basically impossible for these people to go anywhere, unless they start walking. Own a car? Out of the question.

I just can’t imagine how it can be that our Homeland Security and FEMA response team cannot drop CANNED FOOD AND WATER immediately following a disaster. Does that make you feel safe and secure that they would respond in another emergency? Does that not make you wonder what they are doing to earn their paycheck? Does that not make you wonder where your tax dollars are going.

It leaves me to wonder if this truly is a racial issue. I must be really stupid if I did not get this at this late date. I guess I am just stupid.

  43. Linda Says:

Maybe at the site of the picture being taken of them dropping supplies????

Debbie: read the news. Look at the pictures on msnbc.com and cnn.com and foxnews.com

Logistically, how do you drop supplies to people sitting on the roofs of houses that are hardly standing? How do you drop supplies down at the superdome without causing a total riot and adding to the already horrid conditions there? How do you do it? If you can think of a way, let the military know, I’m sure they would be more than willing to do it your way if it was safe for everyone involved.

And what is so wrong with people walking to evacuate? Not owning a car is a HORRIBLE excuse for some of those people. Spending the night on the side of the road seems a much better choice than staying at my house because I dont have a car. You’d be surprised at how many people there are out there that are just waiting to help them but dont know how. I know that if I was in that situation and didnt have a car or means of transportation, my own two feet would take me as far away as I could get. And then, I would ask for help. Not because I feel I deserve it, but because its a desperate situation. And its the south, come on… people are generally nicer there. I’m sure SOMEONE would have helped me.

  45. case of the dumba$$ Says:

How long has the government been telling people to prepare for situations like this? Lets see… since 9/11/01. This isn’t about race, bad politicians, or lack of effort on anyones part but those who are stranded. HELP YOURSELF PEOPLE…. how hard is it to keep a couple cases of water around, a bottle of bleach or filtration equipment, some can foods of your own. Lets face it… this is a major catastrophe and it is going to take a long time to get to everyone.

You all seem to have forgot that we prepared to invade Iraq for six months. Our troops didn’t arrive in an hour. Wake up and smell the freaking coffee. Instead of sticking out your hand for help, prepare yourself to need no help. If this isn’t a wake up call for you and your family to prepare, then you will be a part of natural selection and parish with the rest who continue to sleep.

Logistically isn’t it a football field? why could they not drop? I really do not understand.

What i want to know is HOW COULD THEY NOT???? Hindsight is always 20/20. Maybe many of these peole would have walked had they known what would actually happen. Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that the hurricane actually did not destroy the city - everything would have been pretty much ok if the levees had not broken. There are no answers here, but I really don’t like the way it reflects on us as a nation. We are already hated by most of the world, and surely they are enjoying our drama.

  47. Canadian Says:

I’m so sad, frustrated and so angry at the same time.
Sad to see these ppl dying without help. Where is the help?why does it take so long? everybody know there will be an huge hurrican coming and no preparation…there is no food and no water in the US??yes ppl know they have to run away but it’s too stupid to think that everyone will leave…what’s abt ppl who havent a place to live?and wat’s abt the old person??
When i watch TV Im so sad to see all this chaos in the town. During the tsunami in Asia, even if ppl are poor they try to help each other. But in the most powerful country wat can i see??? chaos, anarchy… is it the freedom that Bush wants??and what’s abt the troops??oh there are in … Iraq fighting for the “Us” so Bush and Co can become richer than they are..dont they have steal enought money like this? yes it’s easy to blame the looters but what they steal is nothing in value compare to what Bush and Co get in Iraq!!!
So maybe this hurrican is good thing afterall so ppl can be aware of what’s happen in the US…
I dont believe in God so I wont sit and pray but I will have a thought and do what I can for all these ppls dying in new Orleans…

I’m in the state of TN. and for my self and 2 children I received $185 per MONTH, Even with public housing THERE IS RENT TO PAY 30% OF YOUR MONTHLY INCOME, OH YEA, THERE ARE UTILITIES TO PAY AS WELL, WHICH RUNS NEARLY $100 A MONTH, THAT MUST BE PAID IN ORDER FOR YOU TO EVEN LIVE IN PUBLIC HOUSING. Actually, yes I do.

“Do you think people want to homeless, hungry and helpless?”

    Yes, yes, and yes.

Tell them to stop failing their drug tests at work, stop driving intoxicated and getting DUI’s, stop making fatherless families by fucking everything that moves, stop blaming everyone else for their predicament and self-actualizing.

P.s. Self-actualizing means becoming self-dependant. Noone should have to tell you what to do…. nooone should EVER tell you what to do.
