nola.com reports “Army engineers struggled without success to plug New Orleans’ breached levees with giant sandbags”
What are they doing right now to plug the breach to the levees? This is the crucial first step that has to be taken in order to control the flooding in the city. This is some information that I’ve found on how the Chinese government fixed a Yangtze river levee breach:
“On Aug. 7, the main levee of the Yangtze River collapsed at Jiujiang. Officials lost control and instructed that anything that would pack be dumped into the opening. There were 5 million tons of rice, soybeans and other grains, more than 50 big trucks and 18 ships sunk into the torrent.
Later, a military team of 200 soldiers specially trained in blocking floods was deployed from Zhangjiakou to help. They pounded in pilings, fixed boards and poured cement and stone to block the opening and they finally stopped the flooding.”
If the Chinese government could close a breach on the Yangtze river levee and hold back the full force of a raging river that is comparable in size and strength to the Mississippi, we can close the canal breaches in a similar fashion, specifically by sinking ships/barges that carry full loads of rocks or other heavy material.

What can those of us from outside the region do to help those most in need?
The magnitude of the disaster is overwhelming even for those not directly involved. We want to help!

I am trying to locate my parents - Cary and Karen Crosby - they are in Wiggins (Stone County, I believe) - it is located about 40 miles inland from Gulfport - I have not heard from them since Sunday morning.
Also, I grew up in Long Beach and still have many friends there - does anyone know what has happened to the homes in Long Beach? The Dauro’s? Jackie Parker?
Any assistance is appreciated! Thank you very much!

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, dead in New Orleans, mayor says
By BRETT MARTEL
Associated Press Writer
NEW ORLEANS — The mayor said Wednesday that Hurricane Katrina probably killed thousands of people in New Orleans.
“We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water,” and others dead in attics, Mayor Ray Nagin said. Asked how many, he said: “Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands.”
The frightening prediction came as Army engineers struggled to plug New Orleans’ breached levees with giant sandbags and concrete barriers, while authorities drew up plans to move some 25,000 storm refugees out of the city to Houston in a huge bus convoy and all but abandon flooded-out New Orleans.
Gov. Kathleen Blanco said the situation was desperate and there was no choice but to clear out.

WATCH “THE COMEBACK” ON HBO..SUNDAYS…LIKE CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL
September 1st, 2005 at 11:50 am
Roger of course you won’t see that because our media won’t show the real truth…they never have…by the way, there is looting and there is survival and some are taking diapers and water for survival others are being stupid and taking electronics and jewelry.
September 1st, 2005 at 12:18 pm
Roger, if you are not prejediced, what is your point?
Obviously you are one of the privileged and don’t understand the dynamics of poverty.
Careful how you judge, lest you be judged…..even observations are judgemental when thrown out in the way you found this forum.
I hope you don’t have any friends or family missing…..I do, and their color of skin is irrelevant.

If anyone sees or talks to Mark Holian or any of the folks from Jourdan Street, Rampart St, and Sisters on the canal at St. Claude, please tell them their friends in Lacombe are asking for them.
We know Mark planned to ride it out…he may not have any way of contacting us without his address book.
This is the area of the 9th ward near Holy Cross that is apparently underwater.
Any news would help.
Thanks.
PS My email address is down until my local server is reconnected to the outside world. Please post a reply in this section, if you have news.

We are trying to locate my two cousins in Biloxi, MS. Marianne Robinson and John Martin Boersema. Both live on McClellan Road in Biloxi. If anyone can tell us how severely that particular street was affected by the storm, or if there is a nearby shelter we might contact, we would appreciate any information. We live in Texas and have not heard from them.
September 1st, 2005 at 7:25 pm
Roger, give me a break. I am a middle class white woman with three small children and if I was in that situation you can bet your butt I would be at a store getting food and diapers for my children. My whole family has talked about and all agree that they would too. We have a friend missing from that area and I just can imagine the grief his wife is going through while the rest of us desperatly search the internet for information. Stop lying to yourself, you are predjudiced or you wouldn’t have made that comment.
September 1st, 2005 at 10:05 pm
We are looking for my mother in law. She is in Carriere, Ms. We haven’t heard from her since before the storm. Her name is Peggy Seals. She was supposed to be riding out the storm in a church (name unknown).
God Bless
September 1st, 2005 at 10:17 pm
C’mon, we see on tv what is happening, and i too noticed it. They had a choice to make with the time on their hands, and CHOSE to loot instead of help others. Yes, taking necessities would be vital for your family’s survival, but electronics and buggies full of NIKE shoes!!??? Wake up, people and quit making excuses for this criminal minded activity.
September 2nd, 2005 at 3:26 am
Bill,
It’s my understanding that Reunion Arena is now housing several thousand of people. They are asking for food bigtime!
I don’t see how any of you can sit and argue about why people are taking what when none of us are in their shoes.
No water and food will literally affect your brain and it’s ability to think straight. These people have NOTHING at all! Maybe they think they will have power, maybe they have family that have no shoes. In a time like this I find it very insulting that anyone can say what is happening out there is wrong. The survival of these people is ALL that’s on their mind and all that should be!
When it becomes a “Survival” mode the LAST thing they are thinking about is helping OTHERS! It’s “do what it takes” time and I am more than willing to bet any one of us put in that situation would do the exact same thing! It’s do it or die for a relatively large number of these people!!!! I also think there isn’t a person who isn’t actively experiencing what is going on there that can make any comment negatively about what’s criminal and what’s not.
That old saying “Walk a mile in my shoes” comes to mind right now……. If you haven’t ever faced death you don’t know the desperation that comes along with it. I almost drowned as a child, I was with my friend we were probably 5. I can still remember scratching her and using her to try and get to the top of the water. Is that criminal because I was in a sense drowning her to survive? NOPE, it’s nature! Survival of the fittest! Luckily, we were both rescued. I know what it’s like to literally be scared to death!
Please everyone, stop judging and HELP these people!!!
September 2nd, 2005 at 3:42 am
Just a suggestion, how about the folks that want to talk racism or any other political or social issue find another resourse for it. Horrified by the pictures and stories I am getting here in my comfortable California home I came to this site looking for more detail, hear honest and REAL vioces corcerned around this unbelievable catastrophie. PLEASE people, leave this garbage for another time and let us focus on what we can do to help. Looters or no, they are people in a desperate situation. Our help and support is really all we should be thinking of.
September 2nd, 2005 at 8:12 am
I agree that we should not use skin color as a measuring stick in any situation!!
I think the President and both houses should mandate temporary martial law for not only the areas hit, but also for the shelters where people have been taken. A general from the national reserve should address all residents of each shelter with the message that being in this shelter (and cared for by these volunteers) is a privilege. As a resident of the shelter, if you do not live up to your part of the bargain by restraining yourself from stealing, vandalism, doing drugs, or any other offense that would be punishable by law, you will be dismissed from the facility IMMEDIATELY. No second chances, no trials, no lawyers….play right and let us try to help those who need and want our help…or you are on your own. (If you agree, write your senator and congressman as well as the president…it’s a tough stance to take but without those with power stepping in to take the tough line we will all fail as human beings during this crisis!)
As resident of south Louisiana I know how awful this situation is and have many friends and relatives who have lost everything but their lives (for which we are most grateful). We all want to help but you cannot help individuals who do not want to help themselves…and those who are trying to help themselves should not be punished for these few.
This tragedy is only less than that of 9/11 because it was not perpetrated with premeditation and malice….let’s keep it’s aftermath that way as well.
September 2nd, 2005 at 11:37 am
you people are friggin retarded! New Orleans is a giant ghetto housing some of the most underpriveleged people in this country. we live in a white man’s world…that’s why you don’t see any white people in the aftermath. all the white people had money and means to get out and i’m sure were among the first to be rescued! wake up people, this country is just as racist and inequal as in days of slavery. blacks always have and always will get the shaft!! after spending a lifetime enslaved by the white man, they desreve ANYTHING they can get for free…especially in this time of need.

Julie,
It is people like you who keep racism alive and well. I know the inner workings of New Orleans very well and a great deal of it is very poor, subsistence living people. But poor does not mean trashy! I agree that people should be able to take food and water for themselves and their families since we are obviously seriously failing in providing these…but what good are 12 pairs of Nike tennis shoes going to do them???
I have lived in the deep South the majority of my life and do not judge people based on their skin color or how much money they have…and neither do my friends and relatives. But whether you are white, black, purple or pink, trash is trash!!!
September 2nd, 2005 at 8:20 pm
When I watch the news, among those being evacuated there are more black people than white, so if it’s because most of the whites were able to leave already for whatever reason, then of course it’s more black people doing the looting, they’re trying to survive. White or black they are still people of value and need our help.

Vaya, a policeman said on television that the majority of looters were starving people, so they let them take the food they need ; they even stay in some stores to make sure people don’t take more than they really need. But there are also looters who take advantage of the situation and steal number of clothes or video items ; the police tries to arrest them, but said they won’t shoot them, because they’re not threatening. And there’s finally the gangs, who are always been a problem in New Orleans, the reporter said ; they’re extremely violent and stole guns in the first place and then fired at policemen or rescuers ; they’re the ones the police and the army received order to shoot.
So among all the looters, there’s a big difference between parents who are just trying to feed their children, and the gangs who try to make this city a lawless place. And of course the police won’t fire at all of them, it would end in a bloodshed ; so stop wrtiting thinks like “all the looters should be shot at” or “they’re all just trying to survive”, neither of them is true.

Wired News Said :
Of all of the websites tracking the Katrina disaster, surely one of the most remarkable is Scipionus.com.
Visitors swoop down over a map of the Gulf Coast that’s awash in hundreds of red teardrops, each denoting information about specific geographical points in the area. That’s pretty amazing in itself, but there’s more: All of the information on the map has been provided by ordinary citizens, most of whom presumably have come to the site in search of information on the flood themselves.

As a former disaster worker who know how the process works I must say, that there is no way that FEMA or any other relief agency could have enough resources stock piled for an event like Katrina. FEMA cannot even begin obtaining necessary supplies until it is an actual event which is after it happens and federal funds a appropriated. True they do have a certain amount of supplies on hand, but not nearly enough to satisfy the need and why would anybody want to take 10,000 bottles of water into an area where there are 20,000 people. that is just asking for more trouble.
One of my co-workers said since the people who stayed behind when the evacuation was ordered obviously had no mean to leave N.O. why didn’t the city authorize all the school buses to take people out of the city? They would have saved people and the school buses!!
FEMA and the federal response has been as fast as I have ever seen on a disaster.
The problem is the National Guard should be in there in force. It is the citizens of N.O. with their looting and gang warfare that is helping to hindering the federal response. Some of the responsiblity must lie with the citizens.

Someone named Cari posted a query on your site about Franklinton, LA, but failed to give an email address. This might help her:
Franklinton, La., in Washington Parish is without any federal assistance, and there is only a small Red Cross office open. The entire parish is without food, water and electricity. We are panicking. The citizens here are wondering why no one is helping us. From what we can pick up, FEMA and the rest of the government didn’t know we were in need because no one called them and told them. Hello!
There is no land-line phone service, radio service or cellphone service. The lines are down and electricity runs the cell towers. Hello! We need electricity at least for critical areas so there can be communications. Why didn’t FEMA send in people to survey the damage and needs of people in a 100-mile arc north of the area where the hurricane came ashore?
We have been told that power will be restored sometime in December! From all indications the parish itself received damage. There was little loss of life from the hurricane, but there will be loss of life from starvation and dehydration if conditions continue. Please send us help!

HAS HAD CLOSE CALLS WITH HURRICANES AND THERE IS ALWAYS FLOODING AFTERWARDS. I DONT THINK THEY NEW HOW SEVERE THE SITUATION WAS GETTING.WHEN YOUR SEEING THAT KIND OF WHEATHER SO OFTEN YOU SEEM TO BELIEVE IT’LL GO THE OTHER WAY. I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THE CARROLLTON AREA OF NEW ORLEANS.I LEFT JUST 2 DAYS BEFORE THAT BITCH KATRINA HIT. I WAS THE LAST OF MY FAMILY TO LEAVE…EVERYONE IS SPREAD OUT THROUGH LA. AND TEXAS. MY JOB,HOME AND MAYBE EVEN ALL MY FRIENDS…NEW AND OLD MIGHT NEVER BE SEEN AGAIN(BLACK,WHITE,ASIAN AND LATINO). I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN ONE OF THE THOSE SOME WOULD CALL A LOOTER.THERE ARE NO MORE GANGS IN N.O. THAN ARE IN ANY OTHER CITY IN THE U.S.,ONLY DUMMIES WHO BELIEVE STUPIDITY AND VIOLENCE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING. NEW ORLEANS IS PROBABLY THE OLDEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY…I WOULD BET N.O.
