Sheer Pandemonium!!!

Looting after Katrina
People carry goods from businesses in downtown New Orleans.

That’s the only way to describe the current situation in New Orleans…

CNN is reporting that there are numerous cases of looting, carjacking and even shootings near the hurricane shelter.

From CNN.com

Deteriorating conditions in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina are forcing authorities to evacuate the thousands of people who sought refuge at shelters in the city amid reports of looting and shootings in the flooded metropolis. The storm is blamed for at least 70 deaths and widespread destruction on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

  1. TimW Says:

Only the dregs of society would perpetrate such crimes in a time of sheer tragedy. Talk about the worst of the worst. I fear that even worse crimes are yet to come. Further evacuation of the city seems like the best course of action. Get everyone out.

  2. Ezra Dike Says:

I fear the impending break in Jefferson Parish will further cutoff the only existing path out of the city. My sisters planned to take Tchopatoulous, however its spelled, out to 310 and I-10 W in the morning, it looks now that this will not happen. They also confirm reports of prisoner uprisings through Police contacts.

  3. Audubon Park Zoo Monkeys Says:

    are the monkeys safe?

    where’s Toussant

  4. Ezra Dike Says:

I think now that the governor is leaving the situation to others. If I were her I’d get the celebration cruise line and and barges in their to get people out as fast as possible. Land routes are questionable, helocopters no good for masses, think out of the box, please.

  5. Mike Clark Says:

Folks in time of a Catastrophic Event You have to be responsible for yourself. The Government cannot, it is just too much. Civilization is based on infrastructure and when that breaks down it takes weeks or months to repair. Cruise Ships? Think about it! There are issues of draft depth, and most cruise ships are scheduled well in advance, you just can’t do it easily. It would probably take 30 to 40 cruise ships to house the homeless.

Bottom line, next time a CAT 4 or 5 is coming you way, GET THE HELL OUT LIKE THEY WERE WARNED!

  6. Carolann Says:

I am heartbroken at the loss of life and the increasing deterioration of events.

Get Federal troops in there fast and start air-evacing EVERYONE out. It is only going to get worse.

I was hoping that the City of New York would be primary in offers of rescue equipment and personnel. Has anyone heard yet if they have sent teams in?

    Thank you.

  7. JDV Says:

no cell phones, can’t get there by car.. the drug dealers are getting desperate.

  8. Ezra Dike Says:

People’s hubris gets the best of them in so many ways, this is no exception. But, its certainly humbled those and put us in a situation to take the moral highground of selflessness to help those we can.
My sisters are becoming more and more frightened in response to the crazy robberies going on, proliferation of shotgun in hand police, boat and body carrying emergency officials and general unrest. Policman are telling of huge body counts already, ‘ ten thousand bodies’ one said.
In order to protect thier gas tank from people they parked thier car so that the tank is up to a concrete post.
The news media is one hell of a strainer.

  9. Mike Says:

I dare say this is an argument in support of the second amendment. When the government cannot protect you from predators, you must protect yourself. It reminds me of the LA riots and the scenes of the Korean shop-keepers standing on the roofs of their stores with AR-15s in hand. New Orleans has almost become some sort of post-apocalyptic mayhem the likes of which you see in movies like Dawn of the Dead. Even cops are joining in the looting and general debauchery. Hopefully, there are some armed citizens that are GOOD PEOPLE remaining that are helping people out.

Let’s get the National Guard armed and send them in to stop all this. I’ve seen them on T.V. and I’ve noticed they don’t have their rifles or ammunition. It’s a dangerous place now, with the prisoners and looting, and all that. We must treat it like a war zone until all the innocents are evacuated.

  10. helen hugo survivor Says:

I lived on St.Croix USVI when Hugo hit. The islanders went nuts. They were looting during the hurricane!!! Stole anything that wasnt nailed down. Even the police chief got busted for stealing. They prosecuted some that were caught on video tape. It took a while before they did it…But I hope they do the same thing to those who stole more than food and drinks. By the time the National Guard got on the island “to restore law and order” every store was looted… Police need to video tape all the thieves they can and get them later when things settle down. It aint right. This would make a great horror movie, but sure not a reality show.. Too bad that is what it is. It’s scarry to watch how a human being can deteriorate in his thinking of right and wrong so quickly.. I am glad I am on high ground and I pray for all that are stuck down there.

  11. Sebastian Says:

If we take toys with parts that have the ability to kill babies off the market we should take guns that have the ability to kill all off the market. They don’t always kill, and certainly don’t in smart hands but the oxymoron logic used to justify our paranoia and egos should go. Crazies in N.O. La wouldn’t have guns if Americans were truely logical.

  12. Mike Says:

Sebastian, the thing is, criminals will always have them. Do you really want to disarm women? The pistol is the ultimate rape-prevention kit. Anyway, I don’t really want to drag this down into a second amendment argument. But this kind of situation is the last thing you want to be in defenseless against predators.

  13. Gary Says:

I am a native of New Orleans! It’s always had a radical Afro-American part of the populace! They want free shelter, free food, free diapers, free housing, free medical care and a free ride on the mostly white tax paying populace. The reason the city of New Orleans is in the deplorable shape it’s in is because of years of corrupt Afro-American Mayors especially the Morials, city council jokers, corrupt Afro-American Public School Leaders and the list goes on and on. Finally, the city of New Orleans has ignored the advice of experts to enhance their levee system for just this type of Perfect Storm!!!

I am so glad, I had the intellect and the common sense to get out of that state some years ago! God help the other people!

If given a Chance Get Out of the Bananna Republic of New Orleans, Louisiana!

    Gary

  14. No sympathy for the looters Says:

I think the looters should be taken and dropped into the waters and left there. Rather than celebrating the fact that they lived, they’re looking for someone else to rip off and further ruining NOLA.

The police should use force, they want to loot in front of you? Fine, pull out your pistol and shoot them in the head. Bet their moronic counter-parts will get the picture really quick.

    Assholes.

  15. clyde Says:

Its nut.. Send in the National Guard full force. Please ppl stop rippin on the black folks. Not all of the black ppl are bad. Also.. at this time.. Im sure at least some of the ppl are looting for good causes.. if your n this tragic environment u have to survive by any means.. if your kid need food.. u have to get it.. i dont agree with stealing… but if the govt isnt able to provide basic neccessaties (food, water) ppl HAVE to survive.. u would do the same if u were in that predictament… Tell me otherwise u have havent lived n a situation that warrants… .

  16. Heartless Says:

Let them all sit there and rot. They were told to leave days ago and they did not leave. Like it would be some great loss if the entire sesspool they call New Orleans was completely lost. The governor is calling for a day of prayer for the sadam and gomorrah of the modern world. How funny is that…???

  17. Skeptical Says:

What I find ironic about the looters is; where are they taking the loot? If 80% of the city is under water (as reported on CNN) it should be easier to identify the perpetrators. As the waters continue to rise and the entire city is to be evacuated, do they really think they’re going to be able to take the loot with them? Failure to ignore initial local government requests to leave the city by that select few, ghetto, have created a law enforcement nightmare and turned needed attention away from more pressing issues as re-establishing essential basic structural integrity. For those who left before, my apologizes for your loss, those who ignored warnings and stayed and who are now showed world-wide on every television looting, terrorizing and causing general destruction and mayhem will get what they deserve in the end. Such behavior shows the world how we are unable to control our own people in times of crisis on our own soil while at the same time trying to control another people halfway around the world.

I’ve read comments about bringing in the guard and military. Anyone ever thought that perhaps there are none to spare? Keesler (the closest military installation) is addressing recovery and cleanup in that area as best as possible. Additional units (active, guard and reserve) have been called to action and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to restore order, peace and stability in those regions. You want them…bring them back!

What more do the people of N.O. want? Everything fixed by morning? Civil emergency agencies are doing what they can as best as they can. For now, take comfort that the French Quarter, the only thing worth seeing anyway, isn’t completely flooded out. With any luck that part could be salvaged, cleaned, and turned into something spectacular other than a piss stained, drug infected, ghetto hangout.

If the current mayor wants to pray, then she should pray. Unfortunately this isn’t a Wizard of OZ movie where she can click her heals, there’s no place like home…anymore. N.O. will be cleaning up for months. What bodies are not recovered, alligators will consume. The smell will get worse. Government aide will go to the line the pockets of the already rich and those with oil. Don’t expect to rebuild this year, the ground has to dry, if/when the water gets pumped out. If you have relatives up north, go. If not, be a leader and mentor and help as best as possible. If you’re a follower, listen to the authorities, do as you’re told and help in every way and don’t become a problem for someone else to contend with.
    Good Luck!!!

  18. Bryan Says:

Forget the looting - it’s meaningless. It’s like focusing on a mosquito bite after Hiroshima. Put the cops to good use. They should be rescuing people.

There’s no place to put the looters anyway.

The people need transportation to a safe place - my vote is upstate Louisiana - huge camps - at least for now. I think people will instinctively start walking north, just to get out of the water.

  19. andres Says:

Good comments…learned a lot about N.O. from the posts…I had been wondering why the Media had not been showing film of people working constructively on the problem of repairing the levees or trying to alleviate the problems encountered. Seemed like msnbc and cnn were just concentrating on the looting. Seems like of the 20% that staying behind; 90% are black…guess they did not have the wherewithal to leave the city. Remember that you had to pay your own way when told to evacuate and had to have some place to stay. If you don’t have relatives out of town to stay with or the cash to spend on a lengthy stay at a motel; you had no recourse but to stay.
The looters should be prosecuted when things get back to normal (if they ever will).

  20. compassion Says:

Has anyone thought that the folks who stayed in town may have had no way to get out? No money, no transportation? Have you thought about those who have disabilities that could not be moved, or the elderly who live alone? This is a socio-economic issue, the looting-people who stayed. You should have compassion for those who are struggling! (This is a response to the comments made by Heartless, people like you breed hate and that is what leads humanity to such lows.)

  21. Tel-Chai Nation Says:

Katrina: possibly the worst flood in US history

I would’ve tried to blog about this earlier, but I was on a trip up north yesterday. New Orleans has suffered from what could possibly be the worst flood storm in US history, a flood that’s submerged close to 80 percent of the great city

  22. cdu Says:

I agree that NewOrleans is no more than a sesspool,a place for people to go get drunk,doped-up and really act stupid.I have only been to the FrenchQuarters twice, and that was two times too many. With all the Voo-Doo and Demonic activities i”m suprised it has lasted this long. But i do hate to hear of the lives that has been lost!

  23. Vic Says:

not all looters are black for that matter. i’ve seen on tv white looters as well. focussing on the skin color and stereotyping only shows your racism, and that’s a bigger issue than taking water, and food to survive.

I agree with compassion “Heartless, people like you breed hate and that is what leads humanity to such lows.)” and that goes to cdu, and the other peeps with racist remarks. shame on you. i’m so glad not everybody in the states is as brainless.

this is a major catastrophe that hit our country. not only NOLA. lots of people dead, and not terrorist to blame. we are all together in this.

  24. pietkeitel Says:

the day after tomorrow is today, baby!!!

  25. Jennifer Says:

I once watched a tv show (wont mention names) that had a group of homosexuals on that continued to say that their God is a loving God that would not judge them for loving “another person”. Well, first of all, who is their God? All through history there have been hundreds. My God, the one this country was founded on, is a loving God, but does not tolerate sin. We live in chaotic world because of false idols, tolerance, and a turning away from the True One. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and noone will enter the kingdom of heaven but by Me.” To those living in this wonderful nation… He is coming.. and if you’re blessed enough to be here, heed the warning of His word. The Lord says of those that worship idols, call on your God in time of trouble.

  26. Debbie Custer Says:

cdu..seems you know alot about getting dopped up and acting really stupid…just what were you doing the two times you were in the french quater? and i guess your town is free of all these things…stupidy,,,drugs…alcohol , its good to know there is a place such as that…hahahaha…people need to stop talking about what they perceived NOLA to be you know what they say about opinions right? be compassionate about the people that are there going through hell and even those that were able to leave,,,they have nothing to go back to…CDU and HEARTLESS …I hope you never find yourself in a simular situation…neither of you are capable of compassion it seems..which is sad..wonder how you’ll feel when one day you’ll need it…and there is no one to give it to you….

  27. Autumn Says:

Did anyone ever stop and think…………….if you had no food water or even clean clothes on your back at a time like this and there were things you needed to SURVIVE right in front of your face i would have stole these things myself!

  28. Autumn Says:

Ya know i dont know why i even stopped at that I can not believe that people cant put aside there differences and open up thier eyes that thousands of INNOCENT people are in a time of need WHO CARES IF THEY ARE BLACK, WHITE, BLUE, GREEN……THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS! I THINK IT IS IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO MAKE STUPID COMMENTS WHO SHOULD BE DROPPED OFF AND LEFT FOR DEAD. To leave your family in pain for loosing a loved one, how pathetic!

  29. cdu Says:

TO BRAINLESS VIC,i would like for you to point out the first racist remark i made in my comment if you can.How do you know i”m not black?DUH!As for you STUPID DEBBIE CUSTER,it”s really none of your business what i was doing in N.O. It doesn”t take a rocket scientist to know what goes on in N.O And from the looks of your spelling, you didn”t get very far in school, that or you yourself are quite a dope head, which is it STUPID uneducated or dope head?

  30. Bmy. Says:

WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL OF BLACK LEADERS! Jessie” JUST” showed up.
Where is AL? Looting is one thing, but shooting at aid workers is beyond
me. new orleans original landscape was set up with black folks forced
to occupy the low lying part of the city. white folks live there as well,
but the majority being low income blacks, got sacked. Its an unfortunate,
dire, situation. I feel for people with no family to go to and no food, money,
or help. We all need to step up to the plate and open our walletts.

  31. Debbie Custer Says:

CDU…lol…You make me laugh….You have nothing but bad things to say about New Orleans yet you went there twice..must not be to bad..As for my spelling my key board is messed up…I have an excuse seems You don’t have one for your ignorance..And I am neither stupid nor a dope head…The things that go on in New Orleans go on everywhere or You to stupid to realize that? why You hiding behind CDU….don’t have a real name or affraid to use it? hmmmm …lol…You have a great afternoon…CDU..

  32. cdu Says:

Debbie Custer…lol…hahaha…..you really make me laugh, you must really be keeping close tabs on me,am i that interesting that you look for my theads? As far as the two times i have been to the French Quarters, been to N.O.more times than that, not for the pleasure of it though, is really nunya.Looks to me like your keyboard is working fine now.The reason i called you stupid and a dopehead ,go back to where you first e-mailed me,i am just returnig the favor. And no not everything that goes on in N.O. goes on every where else.As far as my name goes i don”t believe we’re friends, and we”re sure not on each others christmas card list. Makes me wonder why my comments upset you so bad ,when a lot of other people has said the same thing, or a lot worse. Was you by any chance done wrong by someone with the same initals? You have a good afternoon also….Debbie Custer………………………..

  33. Debbie Custer Says:

Well…CDU….aka…Certainly Doesn’t understand…what You mean I’m NOT on your Christmas list? awwww I’m so hurt….lol….Yeah You’re right I look for Your threads…but ummmmm have never emailed You…well dern. Per your comment…Was you by any chande done wrong by someone etc….my spelling may be bad but your grammar isn’t the greatest either. And no I wasn’t done wrong by anyone with the same initials….Well back to where we started…why are you so hell bent on running NOLA further into the ground? So there aren’t drugs……alcohol..crime in most every place? must be a nice place to live…And I’ve been to NOLA myself…lived there for a while and have friends and family that lived there…It’s a bad situation…the people just need compassion that’s not to much to ask for is it? I’m sure you can understand that….Your opinion of NO is your opinion we’re all entitled to that…but we all also have a heart and the ability to have sympathy and compassion for others I’m just asking you to show some….

  34. cdu Says:

Also, Debbie Custer your right my grammar does need help.Once again i apologize for the lack of compassion.

  35. cdu Says:

Now i understand your anger at what i said and i really hope your family and friends are o.k.I realize my remark was not appropriate and i do apologize(had to get help on that one myself).I wish i could help yall more than i’m able to,but i will pray for God to grant everyone the Peace,Strenght, and Comfort that yall are gonna need to get through this.I also will Pray that God will continue to Bless and Keep yall safe!

  36. Debbie Custer Says:

Pattymelt huh? sounds good, thanks.Yeah i am like you i only come to this site to talk to you!But i will tell you this, there is one site,i think it”s called Kenya fires off about Bush again,if you don”t want to get really, really PISSED-OFF then donot go to this one!there is some guy who calls himself aaron,a real F_ _ _-up.There seems to be a thing going on between him and some girl that calls herself ME.Of course i had to put my 2 cents worth in (hard not to when you see what a JERK this guy is).But then again you just might need to take a shot at him, cause i”ve seen what you can do,and you just might tear him a new A– Hole. But then again i would not want to get you up-set,he is not worth it.Well said enough, hofefully by tommorrow i will be hooked up to MSN,if not will let you know.Hope you and yours have a good night, and a Blessed Day tommorrow.
