hi. i'm a 12 year old girl from south carolina is has to write an essay on the response to huricane katrina. so i came here to read responses from the people in america. i can't believe some of the responses that i read on this page. is america not supposed to be ''...one nation under god indivisible...''? i don't understand why our country is so divided when it comes to politics. i can't say that i am republican or democrat because i don't know enough about either of them to make the right decision. but i do know that as an american i am ashamed at the way people in this country attack each other over an issue as serious as huricane katrina. luckily i didn't lose any one i loved in this devastaing event but some of my family was greatly affected. i have an aunt and uncle that live in bay saint louis mississippi. they were lucky enough to evacuate before katrina hit. but by reading these responses i just don't understand how people would rather spend their time pointing fingers at the local or federal government when they should be spending their time helping these unfourtunate people in our country. why does our country have to be split and blame everything on everyone else instead of taking responsibility. wouldn't america be better if we all united together as one against this instead of dividing at a time like this? but then again..what do i know..i'm just an innocent child...

I am ashamed and appalled to be affiliated with the rebublican party at this time in america. On Sunday’s Meet the Press Chertoff lied to the publix by saying “I Remember On Tuesday Morning Picking Up Newspapers And I Saw Headlines, ‘New Orleans Dodged The Bullet.”

According to Chertoff that was one of the reasons for the delay in getting federal aid to Katrina victims was that “everyone” thought the crisis had passed when the storm left: I have to wonder what papers the Chertoff household gets because not one newspaper in the US made this remark.

I’m over this administration, nothing but lies! Chertoff is an embarrassment to the Bush adminstration - fire him George

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

LAW ENFORCEMENT:

I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days.

My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available.

MILITARY:

I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use.

By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

COLLEGE: I graduated from Yale University with a low C average.

I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:

I ran or U.S. Congress and lost.

I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975.

I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas.

The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.

I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money.

With the help of my father and our right-wing friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS:

I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union.

During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.

I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.

With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:

I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market.

In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month.

I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President.

I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. History, Enron.

My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution.

More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history.

I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.

I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history.

I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government.

I've broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history.

I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.

I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.

I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoners of war" detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election).

I set the record for fewest number of press conferences of any President since the advent of television.

I set the the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period.

After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history.

I garnered the most sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of mankind.

I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community.

I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families -- in wartime.

In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq, then blamed the lies on our British friends.

I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security. I am supporting development of a nuclear "Tactical bunker Buster," a WMD.

I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES:

All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view.

All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.

All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.

(Sing along to the tune of Beverly Hillbillies)

Come and listen to my story 'bout a boy named Bush.
His IQ was zero and his head was up his tush.
He drank like a fish while he drove all about.
But that didn't matter 'cuz his daddy bailed him out.
DUI, that is.
Criminal record.
Cover-up.
Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale.
He can't spell his name but they never let him fail.
He spends all his time hangin' out with student folk.
And that's when he learns how to snort a line of coke.
Blow, that is.
White gold.
Nose candy.
The next thing you know there's a war in Vietnam.
Kin folks say, "George, stay at home with Mom."
Let the common people get maimed and scarred.
We'll buy you a spot in the Texas Air Guard.
Cushy, that is.
Country clubs.
Nose candy.
Twenty years later George gets a little bored.
He trades in the booze, says that Jesus is his Lord.
He said, "Now the White House is the place I wanna be."
So he called his daddy's friends and they called the GOP.
Gun owners, that is.
Falwell.
Jesse Helms.
Come November 7, the election ran late.
Kin folks said "Jeb, give the boy your state!"
"Don't let those colored folks get into the polls."
So they put up barricades so they couldn't punch their holes.
Chads, that is.
Duval County.
Miami-Dade.
Before the votes were counted five Supremes stepped in.
Told all the voters "Hey, we want George to win."
"Stop counting votes!" was their solemn invocation.
And that's how George finally got his coronation.
Rigged, that is.
Illegitimate.
No moral authority.
Y'all come vote now.
Ya hear?

"It is the responsibility of the states and locals to plan and KNOW what they need. How can you blame the feds when those who live there every day (according to you) didn’t have a clue. Please. Some of us have been ravaged by hurricanes, so we’ve been there. Not like the scope of Katrina, but we certainly know what the shoes feel like. Our local and state officials PLAN for these things. They make sure that we know what to do and where to go. However, even when you plan, stuff happens. You DON”T use a tragedy as an excuse to politicize or make charges about racism and genocide. You use it to learn, to help and find a way to move on and pray it never happens again. Sadly, because we cannot harness nature, it will happen again. Perhaps we’ll be wiser next time, and part of that wisdom need to be personal responsibility. The government (city, state and federal) cannot always save us. We need to, first and foremost, help ourselves and each other.

Of course, if you really believe we can get troops deployed in another country in 8 to 15 hours–without weeks or months– of PLANNING, I guess all I can say is this:
To those who understand no explanation is necessary, to those who do not understand, none will suffice. "

I completely agree with those statements. The responsiblitity starts with yourself.
YOU-->Local Gov't-->State Gov't-->Federal Gov't

The stupid mayor of New Orleans is blaming everyone he can but himself. He's totally inept!!
To even call in the National Guard takes 72 hrs just for them to get to their unit, additional time to check vehicles and equipment, more time to load supplies and even more time to travel to the area. That takes a minimum of 5 days....

Have you forgotten the tsunami? I don't remember near as much finger pointing on gov't officials. They had been warned for YEARS that those levees were weak and may not hold the amount of water associated with a Cat. 5. They KNEW New Orleans was a "lame duck". The tsunami victims had no warning, remember? Let's not worry about who to blame right now, let's just help. For every minute of electricity Americans spend watching CNN or FoxNews Hurricane coverage, they could be donated that dollar or that time to the cause. Come on now! Why point fingers??? Just put those hands to work!

Several days folks before katrina hit land there was a picture of her in our daily newspaper, it almost took up the hold gulf of Mexico. Now that picture alone should have alerted someone that when it hits it was going to tear up something. Tuesday morning when the sun came up and the world saw 80% of a major US city destroyed you can't wait for local and state government to tell you what they need, they did not know what they needed. Any fool can see this is beyond there scope. the federal goverment should have cut through beaucratic bull-sht and took control of this situation the same day, and please do not down grade the efforts of the New Orleans Police Dept they where just regular men an women holding on, trying to wait for reinforcments to arrive that took to long. We can deploy troops any where in the world in 8 to 15 hours ready to fight, but they could not travel several states to help a city hold it self together. Now those of you who say the government is doing the best they can would be sing another tune if you were there. Because nobody that's there is saying that.

Sounds like Ivy has also been drinking heavily of that "never-criticize-authorities" Kool-Aid. No matter what they do, are leaders must never, ever be criticized. (Unless they are Democrats.) Maybe you should take a trip to North Korea, Ivy, once this crisis is over. You might like it so much there you'd never want to come back to America. There's no criticism of the government in North Korea, no grousing by pissed off citizens, no complaining at all. All day long you can listen to endless praise for the great leader of North Korea who is perfect in everything that he does.
